The False Face of Capitalism

April 6, 2014

‘The time has come,’ the Walrus said,
‘To talk of many things:
Of shoes–and ships–and sealing-wax–
Of cabbages–and kings’ ~ Lewis Carroll

Facebook is an interesting tool; a jumble, a hodgepodge of non-sense, comedy and partisan rhetoric. For instance, a labor friend of mine posted that the top five states for personal bankruptcies were all “right to work states.” Fair enough, an anti-Obama friend posted, and countered by citing the many alleged scandals of Eric Holder and, of course, the inescapable… Benghazi meme. And don’t forget the Koch brothers and so on and so on. But what I find most startling is the amount of cross-over. The majority of these posts are accusatory, defending some partisan position, ignoring the root cause of our problems.

Is Eric Holder a criminal, who needs removal from office? If his present company is any determining factor… maybe! The Obama administration is filled to the rafters with corporate cronies and functionaries, looking to fast-forward their future employment opportunities. If the top five states for personal bankruptcy are all “right to work states,” what did we win? Here look, let me show you how a sledge-hammer works. If Eric Holder is a criminal, is he more of a criminal than say, Barack Obama? Is he more of a criminal than say, George W. Bush or Richard B. Cheney?

It’s those Republicans! It’s those Democrats! It’s the Tea Party! Or my favorite…”It’s those liberals in Washington.” You could find more unicorns in Washington than liberals.

“The real truth of the matter is, as you and I know, that a financial element in the larger centers has owned the Government ever since the days of Andrew Jackson — and I am not wholly excepting the Administration of W. W. [Woodrow Wilson]. The country is going through a repetition of Jackson’s fight with the Bank of the United States — only on a far bigger and broader basis.” ~ Franklin Delano Roosevelt

The premier American liberal politician in the candor of a private letter asserts, the system is fatally corrupt and has been for more than a century. Seventy–five years later, it’s only gotten worse. All the rogues, Republicans and rascals of FDR’s day are long dead and gone, leaving behind the same rotten system. The America-firsters and followers of Father Coughlin railing against Socialism, only to be replaced by Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. Partisan apologists, defending their corner to the best of their ability and never, but never, admitting the truth–the system is rotten.

We spend nearly 60% of our discretionary budget on the military. The US makes Prussian militarists look like the Dali Lama. We need these expenditures to defend an empire based entirely on capitalism and brute force.

As a Socialist this offends me, as a Christian conservative, it should offend you. As a fiscal conservative, it should offend you, as a moderate Democrat, it should offend you. We are a nation of twenty-one million unemployed and under-employed, living under the daily threat of economic terrorism, many facing destitution and homelessness and how does their government of Republicans and Democrats respond to their urgent needs? Ukraine gets a billion dollars in loans from Congress in an hour, while nearly two million, long-term unemployed Americans, get three months of speeches and rhetoric. That fact should ring in your ears like a bell. These are our neighbors; they’re white and black, old and young, with children or in poor health. A government willing to let two million Americans slip beneath the waves of destitution and more than willing, to make room for you.

How can you vote for politicians of either American political party? The Democrats haven’t managed to repeal the Taft–Hartley Act in sixty years and the Republicans haven’t managed to nearly end Rowe vs. Wade in forty. Each legislative session brings new abortion legislation, tinkering at the margins, playing the system. Vote for me! I’m a Democrat; I support labor…sometimes, when it doesn’t get in the way of supporting big business and especially in election years. Vote for me! I’m a Republican, I’m for freedom! I want to get big government off your back, so my campaign contributors can pollute your air and water, avoid paying taxes and off-shore your jobs. Marissa Alexander was sentenced to twenty years in prison for firing a warning shot. Benedict Lupo pled guilty to dumping tens of thousands of gallons of fracking waste water into the public water supply. He faces three million dollars in fines and maximum of three years in prison, because the system is rotten.

Until we change the system, we’re merely swapping pawns on Election Day. Until we understand, there is a special interest group to which we all belong, we can’t progress. We’re all human beings wishing to live peacefully in a just society. We all want to live as we wish, in peace and security, so how can that be accomplished in a society based on a predator-prey principal? Under a social medicine scheme, everyone is covered, no preconditions or promises of “you can keep your own doctor.” All of the issues plaguing Obama care are left in the rear view mirror, all rooted in a corrupt insurance industry and in capitalism. Republicans and Democrats, not fighting for the American people, but selling the people to the highest bidder, fighting to send American tax dollars to private corporations, while railing about the poor on food stamps…the system is rotten!

When we pull down the scenery and look through the stagecraft, the enemy of the people is capitalism. Here in Ohio, Sugardale Foods will be laying off 300 Republican and Democratic workers. The Sugardale workers have packed all the Wal-mart hams for Easter and now, Sugardale will pack off the workers. The rising price of pork conjoined with the massive numbers of poor and unemployed, means Americans celebrate cuts to the food stamp program by eating less pork. As Christians celebrate Christ’s emergence from the tomb, capitalists celebrate higher profits by rolling back his stone to crush American families, Republicans and Democrats all!

The Supreme Court of the United States is currently listening intently to arguments of corporate, religious freedom. The Hobby Lobby Corporation claims it has had its religious freedom infringed, by being forced to supply birth control coverage to their female employees, under the Affordable Care Act. This is the level to which capitalism has sunk, to pit men against women, under the cloak of religious freedom to preserve their profits. This same corporation has no moral objection to purchasing a majority of its inventory from a country where birth control is provided by the state, at no cost. A country where abortion is not only legal, but at one time, could be mandatory. A country which regularly jails religious dissidents, found guilty of practicing religions not authorized by the state.

When we understand that everyone is just like us, regardless of their race, creed, color or sexual orientation, we progress. When we offer our hand in brotherhood, explaining positive socialist policies and pointing out the lunacy of capitalism, we progress. When we make it clear, it isn’t the liberals or conservatives causing our problems in Washington, it isn’t the Tea Party or Republican intransigence; these are only fictions, phantoms and smoke. These are the false faces of capitalism, whose only purpose is to divide us from each other.

“As a rule, large capitalists are Republicans and small capitalists are Democrats, but workingmen must remember that they are all capitalists, and that the many small ones, like the fewer large ones, are all politically supporting their class interests, and this is always and everywhere the capitalist class.” ~ Eugene Victor Debs

Capitalism is an illness, the more you have the sicker you become. It could be discouraging if it weren’t for the impact of our failed economy. The scales are falling from the eyes of millions, the Capitalist training and indoctrination of a lifetime is failing. People are looking for answers and the answer is Socialism. Just imagine what you car insurance would cost without a 100 million dollars advertising budget, imagine a non-profit, co-operative insurance company without executive bonuses, the bonuses are paid for earning huge profits. It is the lunacy of a dog chasing it’s tail.

Excellent piece of writing. The cacophony of the echo chamber these days is so loud and raucous that most people can’t hear themselves, much less each other. This is discouraging, yet…I get the feeling that the “free market triumphalism ” has spun itself out so far that people are beginning to see it for the fraud that it is. Witness the growth of “Independent” voters over the past few years. unfortunately, these citizens haven’t gone far enough. Simply rejecting the Dual Party without a real alternative doesn’t get us out of the rut. The Left (an anomaly, granted)needs to present clear alternatives whenever and wherever possible.

You have hit the nail on the head, greed and the corporations have always been the downfall of the United States. As a history major I use to read about the great business monopolies of the 1850′s and onward and the great poverty they caused the American people.A big book during those times was Ida tartabuls “Shame of the Cities” and now we fast forward to the present and conditions are returning to the 1850′s with unemployment and poverty running rampant.Capitalism destroys everything it touches although most people are too stupid to realize that.It has done so throughout history.FDR and real liberals who no longer exist tamed it for about 30 years but capitalist have taken control of America again and as they destroy ever reform of the FDR era, poverty for the masses is reasserting itself.FDr and liberal reformers masked what capitalism does to a nation and brought great prosperity for awhile.that is all ended and we are again seeing the true face of capitalism
