Is the Administration Pressuring US Intel to Downplay ISIS’s Strength?

September 21, 2015
By

In what has to be a completely unprecedented turn of events, Congressional Republicans are complaining that intelligence assessments of Islamic State’s strength are being downplayed by the Obama Administration.

And intelligence analysts are feeling pressure to toe the official administration line that Islamic State is being degraded.

Someone needs to be fired, declares the press, citing an unnamed CIA Director under Obama.

Says one of the complaining Congressmen:

“The politicization of intelligence products would be a major issue, and these allegations need to be thoroughly investigated,” Rep. Devin Nunes (R-California), the chair of the House intelligence committee, told Business Insider.

“The intelligence committee will take all appropriate action to ensure our nation’s policymakers receive unbiased analysis from the Intelligence Community.”

Despite assertions by Obama administration officials that ISIS is losing, many counterterrorism analysts say the opposite is true.

Certainly Republican administrations would never be guilty of such meddling with the independence of US analysts! Just think back on how the CIA was telling the Bush White House over and over again that if the US invaded Iraq and toppled Saddam Hussein, that this would destabilize the region, unleash bloody sectarian violence, and create an opening for al-Qaeda to enter Iraq – for the first time. Surely the Republicans when they controlled the White House would let US intelligence maintain its independent voice so as to provide the most advanced and objective assessments possible!

A Republican White House would not cherry pick intelligence to falsely claim a connection between Iraq and al-Qaeda and lie about WMD in Iraq!

If nothing else, Vice-President Dick Cheney would never allow such a thing to happen! He’s too much of a patriot and will shoot you in the face even if you’re his friend and hunting buddy, let alone someone who is actually endangering the country he loves. Of course George Bush and Dick Cheney listened and abided by what US intelligence analysts told them! They would have immediately stopped any of their plans to invade Iraq and would never have considered such foolish and criminally negligent plans again!

But to strike a serious note here, it is in fact to be expected that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans can restrain themselves from spinning intelligence as they choose, even to the point of massive self-delusion leading to massive unnecessary death, destruction, and gargantuan expenditures in deceitful and counter-productive causes. That is precisely how empires function – with a tremendous amount of hubris, driven by the belief that their adversaries could not possibly be more than pygmies in the face of Goliath.

Remember what motivated Daniel Ellsberg to break with his colleagues and lose his career by exposing the falsehoods being perpetrated by the LBJ White House and Nixon White House about how the US was winning the war in Vietnam. Recall what caused PFC Bradley (nka Chelsea) Manning to uncover for Americans and the world the crimes and lies being told about the US wars on the Middle East and the rest of the world. Remember how this inspired another well-known whistleblower, Edward Snowden, to reveal what the NSA was actually doing.

Director of US intelligence James Clapper, whose name always reminds me of the person who did much to improve the functions of toilets, Thomas Crapper, has done so much for US intelligence.

One has to marvel at the hubris and hypocrisy of Cheney and his fellow neocons. They have shown that they are masters of distorting intelligence, and outright lying. One has to ask, why didn’t Pelosi investigate their crimes???
